How to unlock the breaks on a 1993 toyota 4runner?

My dad and i are trying to move the old 1993 toyota 4runner out of the garage and it will only move forward just a little and back up a little ad a lot of smoke comes out of the exhaust when he puts it in drive and tries to move it forward what must we do to get the car to move forward completely how would you unlock the breaks if that is the problem
