how to tether your android phone?

ok so i'm not exactly sure i said that right. okay so the thing is i downloaded the pdanet app on my adroid and i downloaded the thing for my laptop. but every time i go through the set up process or whatever it is it says i need to install the android software disk-something but my phone didn't come with a disk.. so i have no idea what to do?? help please. :c
