How to test commapi sample program?

I like to know how to test the commapi sample code for SerialDemo or SimpleRead to identify the com1 is connected and can receive the data from com1 port. I have a GPS receiver that receiving the data. I try to use commapi code (SimpleRead) to receive the data stream but without any result. How can I test it working? Or any better solution.
