How to tell bicycle tyre size?

Hi my bike tyre size is marked on the tyre as 700*25c, does this mean it's a 25inch wheel. If not then what size is it?

25c means 25 cm wide
700c is the name of the size
this specifies the diameter but it;s not necessarily 700 of anything

This is the tyre size in mm.
The diameter of the wheel is 700mm (70cm or 0.7m).
The width of the tyre is 25mm
No idea what the c stands for!

As said in another answer, these are standard European (metric) sizes, you cannot use tyres sized in inches (no mater how close the conversion seems to make the size).
