how to tell a 305 from a 350 chevy engine?

Those blocks are almost identical, so the only way for someone with limited knowledge on the subject to tell is by looking at the casting #'s, then look them up at www.mortec.com. or

http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

you heard right ! i had a 350 in a GMC truck once and the dip stick was on the drivers side and my friend had a 305 in a chevy truck and it was on the passenger side.

not true......dipstick came on either side on both motors.......in fact most have port for either side in the oil pan one side just has a plug in it.....

the only way to tell is to get the numbers off the block and research them...... but it is always possible that a 305 has been bored out into a 350....but not possible for a 350 to b tuned into a 305...well not very likely i think the diesel could b sleeved this way but no 1 does since kit would cost more than new motor....

btw since the dipstick can easily b swapped if some one was trying to sell u a 305 as a 350 they would just swap the tube....

only real way to tell is get the numbers and run em....

Different side for different years, so that won't help unless you know which side they put your year on. You VIN will tell you which engine you have.
Research which digit of your VIN indicates which engine was originally installed in the car.
