how to stop text message pop up on rooted g1

how to stop text message pop up on rooted g1 cause i have handcent and when i get a message i get two pop ups and i want the stop the one from the phone and keep the one from handcent.
 
If you're getting two notifications for SMS messages on the notification bar then you have two apps that are displaying them.

If you're talking about having a popup (i.e. a popup window) and a notification (on the notificaiton bar) then Handcent can display both, so check the settings there.
 
Go to menu>settings>applications>messaging and clear the default. I'm using handcent on a rooted N1 and all I did was what I first suggested and I only get the handcent notifiction. Try clearing the messaging app as the default app, the next time you get a text a block should pop up asking which app should be default, check handcent and that should fix it.
 
The thing popping up asking you what app to use is for viewing the text message though, not displaying the notification. All apps (even no default ones) that listen for the received SMS broadcast could potentially be displaying the notification.
 
Search sms in the market. Uninstall every thing on the list that shows up. Maybe u have chomp or sms pop-up or some other app that dies that if handcent notifications is off. There's a pop-up setting in handcent as well.
