How to start training for a 35 mile bike race?

My friend and I recently volunteered at a bikeathon for MS this past weekend. We worked one of the rest stops handing out food and such. We are teenagers, and when we saw large groups of teens riding, we thought it would be really cool to be able to bike for good causes. My uncle has MS and so we want to do this one, as well as others.

SO, here is my question: How do I go about starting to train for a bike-a-thon?

What are the increments of training distance every week?

Does diet have an impact on training?

Any other overall tips for training?

We are typically athletic, and not overweight by any means, so we feel it would not be too hard for us to participate. Thanks in advance!
