How to start a vegie garden?

In my experience the best vegies for beginners are tomatoes, especially cherry tomatoes. They like rich, fertile soil so dig in lots of composted manure or mushroom compost. Get some cages / stakes to support the plants as they grow. Eggplant are also quite easy to grow. But you should really talk or people locally and find out what works well in your area and climate. Ask the staff at a small local independent nursery. I found "The Lazy Gardener" by Don Burke to be very good on vegetable gardening in Australia.

me and my family would like to start a vegie garden, we dont have the biggest yard but have appointed a fairly large but narrow garden bed for it about 1 metre wide. i was just wondering what are the best type of vegies to grow and if we need any sort of special soil. I also live in N.S.W along the south coast in shellharbour near the beach.

Hi, I'm in NSW too!

I'm trying to start a vegetable garden as well. I can't give much advice because I'm only a beginner too.

Based on my past attempts and people I know, zucchini, broccoli and snowpeas are good to try. I think whether you need soil or not depends on your soil quality but you probably won't need anything special just for a small garden, unless your soil is incredibly poor.

I'm not sure about planting by the coast though and whether it's different. Best to go into your local garden centre and ask!

Also, you will probably need to make a little cage for your garden to stop possums and other animals going for the plants. Stakes and netting or chicken wire will probably work.

Good luck!
