How to soothe muscles after a brutal hike?

My thigh muscles (from my knees to my hips are so sore it hurts to even walk. I went through a brutal uphill/downhill hike. Medically, does it help to try and walk it out slowly or rest as much as possible? Any other suggestions? I don't have a bathtub. It's a standup shower.
 
use a contrast of moist head and cold. start with 10 minutes with a wet washcloth as hot as you can stand it and lay it on the sore muscle. then go immediately into 5 minutes of laying a wrapped ice pack on it.

switch back and forth like that for about an hour, always ending with 5 minutes of ice. that should help with the soreness ALOT.

Also, as a Licensed Massage Therapist, I HIGHLY recommend you get a massage. You have no idea what that will do for your muscles. :) Hope you feel better!!
 
stretch a lot to help with those muscles. Taking pain meds helps a little, but never fully. Taking hot showers helps to relax them as well, but nothing will stop them from hurting. When muscles are worked like that you are killing the muscular tissue, but the pain is the muscle rebuilding and becoming larger, so there is not much you can do about it.

Change from hot as you can stand the shower spray to as cold as you can stand the shower spray about 4 or 5 times to help loosen up your muscles. Also find someone to rub your glutes. If you don't have anyone who can rub your muscles, get a racketball ball and roll around on your muscles. Don't put too much cream like Icy Hot on but you can use a little.
