HOW-To: Shoutcast/S60

Ok, so I've seen numerous requests from people on how to get shoutcast running on their phones, and while you can figure it out based on various threads, there isn't a unified How-to that will walk you through it... until now!

Presented by BORED-AT-WORK PRODUCTIONS (TM):

Step 1: Download the Player:
If you look in the sticky at the top of the forum, the first post has links to get you downloading. But in case that sticky isn't there in the future, simply go here. You will see two files to download, one is the Shoutcast engine, the other is the S60 Streaming Media player... install both to your handset.

Step 2: Find some Stations!:
Open up your Nokia browser (doesn't work in Opera for some reason), and surf to http://www.shoutcast.com/. Search for a genre of your choice, and when you find what looks like a good station, simply click the 'tune-in' button to the left. This will prompt you to save a file, probably called 'playlist.pls' or something similar. Save that file to your E:/shoutcast folder on your phone. Now if you open up the shoutcast player, and you choose a station, you'll see that station available.

Step 3: Edit Your Playlists: (Optional)
A lot of times, when you download playlists from shoutcast, they are hard to read, with a whole bunch of extra garbage in the title. If you want to clean those up, you can do so right on your phone with an opensource freeware text editor written in Python. First, go to the open source product page, and follow the instructions for installing Python on your phone (there are two files you need to install for this, so read the instructions carefully). Next, go to this page, which is the author's homepage, and download 'easyedit', a great little text editor. *Note* on 3rd edition devices, it'll say 'not compatible with phone, install anyway?' during installation.. don't worry, it works just fine, just go forward.

Now, once it's installed, use it to open up any of those playlists that you saved in your shoutcast folder. You will see something that says [Title] and has the Title info after it... edit it to say whatever you want, then save the file.

=======

Some things to note: on a good EDGE connection 128kbps is about the maximum limit you can play, and even that depends on how good your connection is (over WiFi it's fine though). When I edit my playlists, I try to mark what the bitrate is next to it... so for example, I have a 'Smoothbeats.com (128kbps)' and a 'Smoothbeats.com (32kbps)' on mine... I use the 128kbps while on WiFi, but if I'm on EDGE I mostly use the 32kbps, so that I can still use the internet connection for other things.

The best bet if you can find them, though they are harder to find, are the 96kbps streams. Play around, see what your connection can handle (any of you 3G users should be fine with whatever, but in the States we're screwed for that )

Too bad my carrier forces me to pass through a proxy and Shoutcast stopped working since

It was so hot when it used to work before the proxy.

Car Internet Radio

when I save a playlist (.pls) to the E:shoutcast folder, it shows up with ten different stations on the internet radio station list. It shows up as #1, #2, ... etc. Does this if I transfer file saved on my cpu or if i download directly from shoutcast on the e62 browser. any ideas?

It almost sounds like you're saving the file in some sort of non-text format; what app are you using to edit the file, notepad? On Windows I recommend Notepad++ or ConText (but free, open source) for text editing.

I know my PLS file(s) are saved with unix end-of-line formatting, not DOS.

Wirelessly posted (Series 60: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Symbian OS; Nokia E61/0610.04.04; 9730) Opera 8.65 [en])

the ten station thing is because shoutcast has clusters of streams put into one playlist. Thats why i gave you the instructions for the editor on your phone... So you can edit some of those to your content.

For some reason the app closes after a few minutes of play (after I hit a button like the volume keys to get the backlight to turn on)... anyone else getting this problem?

EDIT: Nevermind I figured it out... if the volume is at 0 and you let it go to screensaver, when you press a button to bring it out it'll close the app. Usually you wouldn't get this since you would have the volume at a positive level

I was just setting it to 0 to test it for a while heh...
