How to set up xbox 360 live?

I looked at previous answers before posting this, but none of them were helpful. I was not planning on getting xbox live but we had problems with xbox and microsoft gave us a couple months free so we are going to try it out.

I am a complete moron when it comes to xbox so I need step by step instructions on how to set this up for my kids.
