How To Set Up Midi keyboard Controller / Software?

I'm doing a show at school and am needing to play sound effects. we have a usb midi keyboard controller which connects to the computer and installs fine. we need some free software to map sound files to certain keys. i know there's names for these things but im a sound technician but have no clue about midi.

Any help would be appreciated,
