How to set the Flash ON (not auto!) for Canon A1000 digital camera?

I have looked around and only see a way to turn the flash either OFF or on Auto-detect setting. My flash isn't going off in semi-lighted spaces and I want the flash ON, there must be a way to turn it on manually.. help?? Thanks!
