I have a 1987 Trans Am show car totaly restored and can't keep trannys in it. I've had 3 700r4s rebuit in it in 2 months and they keep burning out! 2 of them didn't even get me home from the shop! Chevy trannys are crap and I want either a C4 ford or 727 mopar tranny they are both bullet proof. Has anyone done this?
My car has a mild built 350 and it kills a 700r as soon as you romp on it.

I know Im not answering the question you asked but have you ever considered a turbo 400 Chevy tranny? They will rob you of a little power but make up for it because of how durable they are. Just check out your local strip or some online forms and Im sure you will see the turbo 400 is the tranny for you and your TA. Good Luck.

It is possible , almost, no almost, if you throw enough money at it.
You need the services of a good machine shop to make the Ford or Mopar tranny fit in a Chevy.
With out seeing the parts, I am not sure if the 700r4 is an automatic or a manual transmission

Regardless of that fact, I think you will need these items manufactured:

(1) An adapter plate that matches the back of the chevy engine
.... probably 3/8 or 1/2 inch plate steel. If the tranny mounting holes can be placed on that adapter plate without interfering with the chevy mounting holes. If not an adapter plate that fits the tranny will also be needed

(2) these adapter plates will need to be married together either with allen head cap screws or by welding.

(3) If welding is done, the adapter plate(s) will need to be surface ground as the welding will warp the combined adapter plates.

(4) You might also need spacer plates made to properly space the flywheel or torque converter.

(5) A custom bushing that presses into the crankshaft to match the tranny input shaft diameter.

Not sure what this might cost?
You will need to talk this over with the machine shop foreman to get an estimate of costs.

If you do this, come back and let us on Answers know.

As far as chevy trannys being crap I truly think your wrong...You are just using one of the worst that chevy made.....You can get a turbo 350 or 400 and it will hold up just fine if it,s built right....They are really pretty cheap to find and build...If you want a drag race tranny ,go for the 2 speed power glide..these came in early camaros and impalas.Alot of drag racers(ford and mopar)will use this one because they can croos the line at a high rpm.....All you need to do is get rid of the junk 700r....
