How to protect wooden floor while building indoor japanese garden?

I am trying to build indoor japanese garden. I cannot use a box since it will be a large area along the wall. Should I cover the area with plastic or rocks and gravel will not harm the floor?

Maybe you can use that rubber liner used to line outdoor ponds or just lay down some plywood. Whichever is cheaper.
