How to produce photographer quality pictures?

I am a student that is just getting into amateur photography as a hobby. i have taken plenty of what i think of as quality pictures but it just dosen't have the wow factor that you see when you look at a professional's photos. I am willing to invest in a good picture editor if necessary. I just want my pictures to look good and get the attention they deserve.
