How to plug my laptop into the TV's HDMI port with a HD cable? Read description . . .?

I have a Compaq laptop with a HD cable input and i plugged it into my TV and all that happened was my computer flashing on then off I plugged it into the TV so I can watch a Movie but did'nt work.

Any help please will help.
