How to paint walls so they have 3-D aspect?

I've seen on HGTV people painting walls so it gives the impression of depth and have an interesting pattern instead of being just flat and plain.

I'm living in Europe now and I want to paint the living room. I have one really long wall that would look great if it had some sort of pattern to it. Currently it is very light brown. I was thinking of some pattern that would look almost like a cross section of the rings of a tree trunk. (brown and light brown). The room has high ceilings, big windows, and gets good sunlight (but not blinding sun)

How does one do this? Are there any (online) videos or books on this subject? Although I am not artistic myself, I could get someone I know to assist.
