how to paint the walls....undercoat??? plz help?

im going to strip off the wallpaper, and paint the house...but ive heard i need to put an undercoat on or something? how do i go about painting the walls?
 
Unless the walls are damaged or is new drywall or painted a dark color I don't think a primer (undercoat) is necessary. Because you are stripping off all the wall paper you will want to make sure that it is clean before painting. Use something like TSP to wipe down the walls to help any adhesive residue left over from the wall paper.

The shinier your finish/sheen is in the paint the more imperfections will show up on a wall. If you use a "flat" sheen it hides those imperfections a little better.

prep it first ... fill in holes ... sand it ... wipe it down to get rid of all the dust n grease ... coat of underlay ... then your desired paint colour
 
An undercoat is like a blank canvas. Most people paint the walls white as an undercoat because anything you paint over it will cover it up.

Also if you are painting large areas, check that the walls are smooth and don't need plastering because you notice bumps more on walls when they are painted.
