How to make my puppy stop whining?

I have a new puppy.
Male / Pug Chihuahua / 8 weeks old

This is our first puppy, so my family and I are still learning about how to properly train a puppy. The puppy is very small, playful, friendly, and loving. He even already goes to the bathroom outside by himself when we open the back door, he immediately now knows that it's "bathroom time!" Our only problem at the moment is when it's night and we have to go to sleep - there's the big problem. We keep him in a small play pen, that is only used for night times, when we're out, or lunch/dinner/breakfast. In his play pen we give him bones, chew toys, balls, a shoe lace, food, water, and a doggy cushioned bed. But even on top of all of that, he still chooses us. So at night there's a huge whining session that lasts about 2-3 hours. Then, I either give up and bring him out, or let my family go through the barking and get no sleep at all - especially for my parents having to work 6 a.m. in the morning. We only had the pup for 3 days. Is he going to eventually get over the barking and find it's not working? Is it only because he's a puppy, and so young? Or am I doing something wrong? Similar experience would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

hes a puppy he will do it no matter what ;[. soo here are some tips
try not to tend to him every time he whines because then he will be used t you always being there and will whine even more
give him toys to keep him busy soo hes not whineing as much
take him out when the last person goes to bed and he first one to wake up so he doesnt go to the bathroom or whine about having to go
hope i helped! ;]

You have to just ignore it. Its like a baby being put to bed in its crib, it wants its mommy so it cries but eventually it understands that it wont work and goes to sleep. If you ignore it everything will be fine, but you have to be consistent. If you give in then you undo everything.

I think he is used to you guys being there and doesn't like you being gone [or away from him] so he whines. What i've tried before ['cause my 5 year old dog did that when he was younger] is i put a ticking clock in his bed with him. That made him think he was with his mother or it reminded him of his mom so he went right to sleep and didn't wake up the whole night.

well hes just a puppy. once he gets out of that puppy stage he'll stop barking.try to ignore him. i know its hard but you are just spoiling him too much. Believe me his puppy stage will only last for a short amount of time.
