How to make cars audio system sound better? $600-$700 to spend?

I don't know too much about car audio so I need help figuring out what is good and what isn't. I have a mitsubishi Galant 2000. I have the factory audio system and the sound gets distorted after turning it to a certain point. I went to best buy and this is what they recommended.

New Alpine rear and front speakers and Alpine deck $350
Alpine 12 in sub and Sony amp $300

Is it really THAT necessary to replace the stock speakers or can I get a pretty clear and decent sound with just the amp and sub?

Thanks

you wont get good sound from just subs. you'll get bass and distorted mids and highs. replace the stock speakers before anything else! :) it adds clarity depth and much louder sound than a stock speaker can offer!

Now yes for a nice new sound system you should get a new deck, speakers, subwoofer(s), and an amp. changing your stock speakers is not necessary, but it will make a huge difference. stock speakers can not handle lots of wattage and a new deck will give your speakers more power, so new speakers are better cause they can handle more power and will sound a lot more crisp. i would not reccomend going to best buy for your sound system because you still need to buy a amp kit (which is all the wiring for your amp) and that is at least $50 buck and even when you buy from best buy, they still charge you for installation. check out your local car audio shop, and tell them your budget, they will work with you and with no hidden fees like best buy. also check out this website crutchfield.com ans sonicelectronix.com. these websites have good prices and will answer many questions about car audio.
