How to make a calendar in PHP and choose a specific date?

I have the code for the calendar itself, and the drop down box for months and years. But, when I run the code, the calendar goes straight to the current month and year. How do I connect the two?
For example, when I choose May 1998 the calendar goes straight to that month.
