How to look groomed for less?

I don't think you need designer clothing and accessories to look nice.. actually, I know for a fact you don't, but what are some ways to look groomed and dress nicely.

I'm disgusted by:
showing bra straps
cleavage
chipped nail polish (it looks extremely tacky)
...and things like that, but I want to know more.

What looks nice? Who do you admire in style?

For even more points, tell me what is appropriate to wear to certain places like the movies, a friends house, a dance recital, etc, and what isn't. Answer what you can though..

Thanks everyone!

I wear high end designer clothes so i can't really help you with your first thing... but i think that what you said is true about what you are disgusted by.... and idk who i admire in style!

Yeah, just wear something that flatters your figure. You don't have to look cheap but wear something that fits you pretty tightly, depending on your shape. If you are busty, you want to emphasize that, if you are skinny you want to emphasize that too. Pick out shirts that flatter whatever body type you have.

Oh I know! It's so nice to know someone else out there knows that looking great on a budget is totally possible.
For me, I like styles from the 50s and 60s. I really admire Audrey Hepburn's style as well as Twiggy's. But as for more modern celebs/fashion icons, I tend to like more of Lily Allen's style and the hipster, indie look. I like to blend those styles so I look edgy but still classy.
When I go to the movies, it depends on where I am coming from; that's what determines the outfit I'll wear. If I'm just coming from work, I'll probably wear peep toe heels, a black pencil skirt and a blouse and cardigan. But if I'm going to the movies from home to meet friends, probably skinny jeans, black flats, my brown leather jacket and a cute top.
Friends house - It really depends on what you'll be doing there; but generally, I'll wear a tunic and leggings and flats or a vintage message tee tucked into a pencil skirt.
Dance Recital - Probably a cute day dress and cardigan with heels.
A don't for all of these cases would be like thigh high or even knee high boots, or 4 inch heels that you cant walk in; a bustier instead of a top, and pants or skirts that are way too tight.

Well, I certainly can't speak for everyone but If you are going to the movies with your man, dressy casual/sexy casual is good (you don;t want his eyes on anything but you & the movie screen of course!) & if y'all are on a date with dinner (hopefully, someplace nice...Olive Garden is nice to me) & a movie, I like to break out a sexy (but still classy) dress & heels (I always bring a pair of cute sandals or flats to change into if I'm going to be doing alot of walking). This may sound sexist but it's the truth as I have found: THERE IS NOTHING MORE SEXY, ATTRACTIVE & LADYLIKE THAN A WOMAN IN A DRESS (this is what my husband has told me & plus I feel more polished & ladylike! Be it a cute day-dress or stepped up a notch for evening or date-night (alot of dresses can go from day to night just by switching shoes, bags, &/or jewlery. It's one, simple, peice that you can simply slip on & it's my go-to garment when I don't have the time to worry about matching tops to bottoms. One of my FAVORITE places to shop for good-quality, sexy, classy, yet; in-expensive dresses is BodyC.com (also known as "Body Central", or "The Body Shop" in local malls around the country.
