How do your respond when you make a mistake? Many people waste a lot of energy berating themselves when they do something wrong or have an error in judgement.
The key to healthy well-being is to learn from your mistakes, then let them go. Each one of us have made and will continue to make mistakes. It’s the price of being human. It is critical we focus on the lessons to learn from our mistakes and what we can do to correct them.
Here are five ways to learn from a mistake and then let it go.
  1. When you make a mistake, own up and look for ways to correct what you’ve done wrong.
  2. Focus on what you can learn from the error. If you were careless, be more attentive to what you are doing. If the process was flawed, look at ways to do it better.
  3. Eliminated the negative. The first response of your inner voice is to start being self-critical. Negative self-talk, whether internal or external, will eat away at your self-esteem. Switch the soundtrack. Remind yourself of the things that you are doing well or focus on the changes you are making.
  4. If you have or could have harmed someone with your mistake, own up to it, make amends by apologizing, learn the lesson, commit to not repeating it, and then let it go.
  5. Understand, the emotional energy expended being unkind to yourself could be better invested in finding a solution to problems created by your mistakes.
I’ve heard it said that monkeys can be captured by putting a pebble in a gourd with a small opening. The monkey puts its paw into the gourd to grab the pebble. However, the opening is to small for the monkey’s paw and the pebble. However, the monkey refuses to give up its prized pebble and it is then easy to catch the monkey.
I don’t know how true that is, but it resembles our internal responses when faced with negative behaviour. We grab onto the negative thoughts and don’t want to let them go. As a result, we trap ourselves in the negative. If we want to get our of the trap, we have to let the pebble of negativity go; only them can we be free.
