How to kickstart a Honda xl 500R motorbike?

How do you start a honda xl 500R? It is a old X plate... Its just the technique i need really i think. Also any information on how the gearbox works would be used? (ie. what gear is where with foot pedal)
 
you wanna lightly push on the kicker with your foot until you get pressure as soon as the kicker moves. that puts your piston at the top. then kick nice and hard once, then repeat
 
on all 2 and 4 strokes over 250cc, I kick slow until I get past the hard spot, then I kick it hard. on a 500cc single if it kicks back you will learn to use this style quickly. on 4 strokes I give it none or just a little gas-1/8 throttle.
