How to keep rabbits out of my small garden?

Attached to my porch, at my apartment, I have a small (5ft x 3ft) little patch of dirt that could be a garden. I've decided to exercise my green thumb and plant some flowers, maybe some veggies. The problem is, the porch is enclosed with about a six inch gap at the bottom to allow for drainage.
This is big enough for rabbits, because I've seen them fit under it.
Are there any plants that are beautiful that I could have that they won't eat? I was thinking of putting any veggies I get into a big pot. This would deter them from getting to those, but what do I do about the other plants?
I'd hate to use mesh around the bottom of the porch, because we aren't going to live here very long, plus I don't want the extra cost.

Any suggestions?
