How to keep from burning out bicycle brakes?

I run my dog with the bike and when we head downhill I have to "ride the brakes" to keep from out running him (he's fast, but not that fast lol). Anyway, I've tried various methods to put less stress on the braking system, I'm not sure which would be the best.

I have tried using both brakes at the same time. I have also tried alternating between the brakes (use one lever part way down the hill, then give it a rest and switch to the other).

I just wanna try to keep from going through brake pads so often, and not sure if either method would be better then the other, or if it doesn't matter and they'd burn out at the same rate of speed anyway.

Thanks
