How to improve midi output in vista?

I've been playing a lot of old games (both in DosBox and natively in Windows) lately. The Windows default midi output driver is okay, but I really don't like the way some games sound. I remember on Windows 95 there used to be replacement drivers that would allow you to use third-party wavetable synthesis instead of the FM synthesis that my sound card had at the time.

Apparently older sound cards that have hardware wavetable synthesis have those features removed under Vista, but if there's a reliable way around that I would be interested in that. Any sort of hardware option is something I would look into. I've seen that there are some midi sound players that allow you to play midi files with Soundfont samples, but this is not what I want. If there is software that can do this, either by adding a new output device or by somehow routing the midi output through to another program, that would be okay too.

I've seen midi file players that utilize software wavetable and Soundfont, but these only seem to play midi files, not replace the midi sound coming from other programs.

I want the programs that I use that utilize midi to have better sound output quality, basically. How can I do it?
