My relatives think my daughter needs a pet fish because we have no pets. While I have no prob w/ this, we do go tent camping in the summer (sometimes up to a week at a time). Can fish survive this long w/o food? It sounds cruel even if they can live that way & I don't want my rellies coming into my house to feed it either. Is it practical to bring the fish to someone to babysit?

Also, how much does it cost to maintain a fish by the way?

At pet stores or even at wal mart stores they sell food tablets. they can feed your fish up to a week or 2 i think. We get them when we go out of town and stuff. they work great when you aren't able to feed them. We have 2 Betta fishes. they cost like $7.00 at petsmart and they just need like a sprinkle of food a day. Super cheap and available in really pretty colors! great for kids too!

You can by a fish feeder that will take care of your fish for yp to 1 month. Auto fish feeder, they sell them in many stores, you put this block in the water before you leave and it will auto feed your fish for 1 month, it works real good.

Automatic feeders for when you are on vacation. They dispense a set amount two to three times a day depending on the feeder.
A timer can take care of your lights in the tank.
The cost is relatively small compared to other pets. All you need is food. I think I spend about $10 every month. A water conditioner for when you do your water changes.$10 a bottle. They say you can treat I think 10000 gallons with one(im not sure on that one). I run trough one in a month or month and a half. I have 2 tanks. Test kit... $35. I've had mine for ages now since I only test once a week. Thats all I can think off for now.
