How to handle noise-complaining neighbors in an apartment?

I live in an apartment with my friend and I. We are college students in a very large college town about a mile off campus. We have a very nice sound system, and have received multiple noise complaints from the room below. Now, it's understandable that she doesn't want booming noise at 2:00AM (which we have never blasted it, ESPECIALLY at 2AM). The people right next to us have had no issues with our noise level, however. This is because we keep it at a reasonable level. Anyway, since my roommate and I are at a disadvantage in this debate, something needs to be done. We do intend to have parties in the future, and it would be a major buzz kill to receive a complaint at 11:30PM.

So, I'm looking for ways to reduce noise for her while maintaining the current noise level for us. We have already placed the subwoofer on a very soft surface that absorbs a vast majority of the vibrations. We have also invested a lot of money in an external wireless speaker that outputs a great amount of noise that is much less audible from below us.

Other suggestions to reduce noise or to handle the situation?

First if you live in an apartment YOU NEED TO CONTROLL the noise and PARTIES SHOULD NOT GO LATER THAN 11pm period.

People have lives ... must get up early for work or can't sleep with bump bump bumping filling the walls.

Go online and put in Acustic or Sound deadening material.

This will REDUCE some of the noise... but FLOORS are generally not insulated and the sound goes right through. (buying something to keep the sound inside your apt will cost... and might not do the very thing you want to do)

MY SOLUTION for you ...is to move and get a place that considers that.... Apt over a garage/ or on the end of the unit...etc. Being on the ground floor won't help because sound goes up too.

If you want to have a loud party .. find a place to rent that is away from everything!

the best thing to do is to put the music on at the level you would want it and go ask her if the music is too loud. if she says yes, just turn it down a little bit.
but if you can't hear it in the hallway she shouldn't be able to file noise complaints. remember this.

From being on the recieving end of stupid parties past 11, I know how this woman feels. Especially since she can hear everything you do on the floor, from walking to jumping to dancing. And, as if that's not bad enough, you've added vibrating speakers and music to the mix. Which, from experience, SUCKS TO EPIC LEVELS. There's nothing worse than having an early morning class and having two JERKS living above or next to you hosting a party to all hours of the night.

Not that you guys are jerks, I was referring to my neighbours.

Anyways; what might be a good level for you guys obviously mustn't be a good level for her. Try talking to her and negotiating a good noise level, and if that doesn't work, ask her for a schedule. Suggest certain hours that you could play the music loudly, such as hours that she isn't in her apartment and at work, or every saturday, and notify her if you plan on being exceptionally loud (such as with a party). There's really nothing you can do here but kiss this lady's rear, because if she keeps complaining you may get evicted.
