How to get the most of my handheld gps for hiking?

I have been given a garmin e trex h and I would like learn how to use it.The manual isnt great but i woud like to enter routes onto it for Northern Ireland so that i can try them.Where would i find the infromation needed to do this.I dont have a cable at the minute so id need to enter the waypoints by hand but dont mind as im keen to give it a go.
