How to get the early termination fee waived

In order to get tmobile to waive the ETF all you have to do is set your phone to work on any network BUT tmobiles. This way when they do their service checks to see which networks you use the most, they will notice its not thiers and since its not theirs it means that you are costing them money. Because they have to pay the other companies for you to use their towers. Thus when they (tmobile) notice that you are costing them money and not making them money they will notify you that they are cancelling your account in a few months, an since in the contract that you signed with them says something like, if tmobile decides to cancel your service any ETF will be waived.
I just recently had this happen to me so I KNOW it works. Yes I am VERY FRUSTRATED with tmobile b/c of it, but at least they waived the fees unline the JERKS at Cingular who just cut off the use of my phones on any towers but theirs.
 
Still sort of dishonest to change your settings because of commitment issues. I have never had to pay any etf's with any company and all i do is explain my situation and they waive them.
 
The reason this works is because of the fact that when you sign a contract you are signing that you are gonna be using the service around the area that you signed up with most of the time. Every other company is the same its not just T-Mobile.
 
Thats kinda funny. I wish there were some sort of provisioning that would allow us to switch to att more often (att is a roaming partner). That would help my reception in places.
 
First of all if there is a setting put on the phone and allowed by TMO then there is nothing dishonest about it. They do this to themselves.

Secondly you cannot just explain your situation to get out of fees. What situation? Who are you talking to because that has NEVER worked for me on a couple different providers.
 
Sorry to hear about your service. I'm in a pretty close boat, as my reception is spotty (lived on a lake so only 180 degrees of coverage, and now on a bay with about 120 degrees of coverage). Hopefully, you'll at least be able to upgrade to a Bold about the same time on new service!
 
I didn't change my settings, my phone automatically switched to another tower, since I was closer to the one than to tmobiles. Plus when I signed the contract the sales associate looked up where I would be using it most and said, "Yes you will have Tmobile coverage there WITHOUT a problem."

I love Tmobile, and I am currently trying to figure out a way to stay with them even if it means signing a new contract under my wifes name.
 
Yeah this is true, i was with Cingular about year and a half back and they sent me a letter that i was using another network more than theirs, they cancelled my account, no fees, nothing only had to pay the bill ofcourse Was very nice because we were already looking into cancelling at the time.

Oops wrong button, sorry. I think contracts are kind of BS. I herd about some new law that is trying to be passed. For the longer you are with the cell phone provider, the ETF has to go down for every month you have service. That way if you are like 3 months remaining out of a 24 month contract, you pay way less then $250 or whatever your ETF is. I don't know if this is just a california thing or nationwide. If this passes I wouldn't have a problem with contracts. And I believe that you should be able to pause your contract. Say you lose your job and can't pay for it. They should allow you to freeze the account for say up to 6 months or something. Until you can get back on your feet.
 
ajs has a good idea. There are many other companies that let you freeze your account like that and I agree that cell phone companies should let you do that too. I do think it is completely wrong to purposley use another tower just so it costs the company more money. If you really don't want to be in a contract then you can pay full price for your phone and not have a contract or go prepaid. Everyone complains about having the early termination fees, but they also would complain if they can't have a free phone to get. Why do you think those phones are free? Its because the company knows you will have service thru them because of your contract so they can give you a deal on the phone. You can only have one or the other. If they don't have early termination fees anymore then you will be paying alot more for your phone.
 
You're better off staying with Tmo in your own name. Switching drops your tenure.
