How to get Orange Box to install?

My son bought Orange Box (HL2, Portal, etc.). I tried installing it on his machine, which is not internet-connected. It just sat and stared at me like a Californian looking at a cow.

I put the disc in my system, and successfully installed Steam. Then got to the point where it was going to install the games, and gave me some BS about needing FOUR DAMN DAYS to download that game. Why are the games even ON THE DVDs if you can't install them that way?

I'm about at wit's end with this piece of steamy shit.

Suggestions?

Should I just sell it on eBay and buy him some games that actually DO work?

If it downloaded in Steam you probably already installed it. It's not going to say "orange box". It's a series of games. Try executing one of them.

step one: open xbox360 disk tray
step two: place orange box disk in disk tray
step three: close disk tray containing the orange box disk
step four: choose game
step five: play it

1. In all likleyhood Toad is correct.
Look for the individual games under the start bar, or click on the Steam icon, select MY GAMES and play it from there.

2. I think the '4 days' to download is for patches. If you can find the game and it doesn't start cause it is patching then right click on the game and look for some sort of property that says 'run while downloading patch' or something similar.

3. I know this is a pain in the ass, I feel for you. If you are within an hours drive of Lancaster PA I will drive over and help you out. However, you have given this kid possibly one of the greatest gaming values ever. HL2, EP1, EP2 and portal are just great games that have metric tons of single player value. You chose well. It is worth the pain in the ass.

4. You might have a problem selling it on ebay. If the computer is NOT physically connected to the internet (not even 56K) then I say you will be alright. But if there is any chance that the Steam client connected to the net and associated the key on the box with the steam client you are toast, that game is worthless.
Having said that.... you CAN give someone the steam account.

(as for the post above this one that says that an internet connection is a requirement, I was always under the (granted possibly mistaken) impression that the boxed version of the Orange Box was so that you could play this game without an internet connection.)

My understanding is you have to authenticate before playing multiplayer.

I might be the wrong one, but that is what I thought.

Erebos is right on this one. You have to sign into Steam online to update/authenticate the game then you can put it into offline mode (you have to do this yourself) to play without an internet connection.
