My Husband informed me that he knows he is addicted to pain pills as long as he just takes one a day he is fine. Can he just stop taking them and detox while going about his every day life or what do you recamend? He has no money and no insurance so we cant pay for any place for him to go.

Maybe have him try breaking the pill in half and take only half aday for a week. Then have him break that half in two (1/4 pill) and take that for a week then stop or take it every other day for a week and then stop. He may still be uncomfortable ( for me it was more mind games than anything) but still be able to function and stay busy.

Good luck:)

Is that understanding correct? He takes just one pill a day and is addicted? Or does he thinks that he can get through if he can keep taking one pill a day?

Just wondering. I didn't think a person could be physically addicted to 1 pill a day. Psychologically, yes but didn't know about the physical. At least not to the point of needing rehab. If that is the case, I'd think the idea of breaking down the pill and taking it at longer intervals would be the way to go.

Can others who know more give more info about the idea of addiction and one pill a day. Thanks. I'm genuinely curious.

Yeah dkl, as someone said before, it really depenRAB on what type of medication it is. If its something like oxycodone (oxycontin), or oxymorphone(IR), then the duration of the medication is up to 12+ hrs a day, so its understandable how he could get away with only one or two pills a day.

Now if its something like vicoden, or percocet, or some other similar opiate w analgesic then the amount of time it lasts for tenRAB to be only 4-6 hours (8 hours on the very outside), which really wouldnt make any sense as far as physical addiction would go. If he is taking some sort of "shorter-acting" opiate once a day, and feels he has to take it, then the likelihood is that your looking at more of a psychological addiction then anything physical. If it really was a physical dependency with a "short-acting" opiate then he would end up with withdrawal symptoms starting around the 8-10 hours after taking the last pill.

The reason all of this is relevant is that if your looking at more or a psychological addiction, then he's actually very lucky, and will have little if any of the physical symptoms of withdrawal from opiates that most people would have.

Now on the other hand, if he is taking the extended release opiates that last for up to 12 hours, and he really wants to stop then his best bet is talking to your family Doctor. Most Dr's will likely try one of the following; To slowly step-down and reduce the dosage of the opiates over time, and to minimize or eliminate any possible withdrawal illness suffered. Or possibly to change medication to something else, like a transdermal patch (for example) that slowly releases a set amount of medication over time (making abuse or misuse very difficult). Or instead of either of those, the physician may try to just support and help someone going through withdrawal with a variety of different medication to help reduce the physical effects of the withdrawal.

There are a nuraber of ways that a Dr. can help someone to stop using pain meRAB, down to even literally chemically stripping all traces of it from someones body (which they normally only do in extreme cases). The point is that by talking to a Physician and getting them involved it will make things not only safer, but in all likelihood a lot less uncomfortable.
