How to garden in the Sims 3?

I know how to get seeds and such, I just don't know how to start gardening.
I went into my sim's inventory and clicked my seed. I chose "Plant" and placed it in my garden. So...it just laid on the ground as a seed. I tried to get my sim to ACTUALLY plant it, but the only option is "Pick up."
What do I do? I read you have to choose the action "Tend garden" but I don't get an option like that. Please tell me how to actually start gardening. I already know how to get everything, it just won't start.

Just click "Plant" on the seed in the inventory. Then, you can choose a place to plant it. Do not take it out of the inventory; your Sim will do that himself when he goes to plant it.
 
I was in an electronics and computer store yesterday and in their gaming section I believe I saw a new Garden and Landscaping expansion pac. Why don't you check either in a local store or go directly to Electronic Arts and see if they will sell you one.
 
Ok, as you have the seeds you will have to go to your sims inventory and the seeds will be there. Then you have to click the seed in the inventory and an option 'plant it' will appear. Then click in it, and you will then have to choose where to put it, like in the backyard or something! That easy ;D

Also, don't forget to water the plant or stuff or else it will die =(
