How to flash an HTC Hero to MetroPCS?

My uncle gave me his old HTC Hero from Sprint (CDMA). I read on Metro's website that it can be flashed for $10, but only text and calling works, no internet and no MMS. But I read that there are ways of activating those features. There's a place that will do a "Full Flash" for $70, but that's too much, specially if there are ways to do it yourself.

I'm somewhat tech savvy and I can easily learn/follow instructions, so, any recommendations on how to flash it myself?? Also, do I flash it after I get it activated with metro or afterwards??
