How to fix my '99 Ford Taurus?

I went on a road trip a few days ago. Before I left, I put a quart of oil in the vehicle. It was about 300 miles to the destination. On the way back I was passing another car, when my car suddenly lost power. It was making sort of a clunking sound, but not very bad. I pulled it over and checked the oil, and it was empty. Called a friend, and he said in my model of car the fuel pump will shut off when low on oil. So I let it cool and added 2 more quarts. It started up and was rough at first but started running fairly smoothly. I got back on the road and when I hit 50 it started making the sound. I pulled it over and let it cool for about 30 min. After that it wouldn't start again. The engine was still very hot. I had to leave it, and will be picking it up this weekend. What do you think I'm in for? Is there a chance I blew the engine?
