How to fix aspect ratio on a Sanyo HDTV?

Whenever I try to use something that uses standard component cables like a dvd player or an older gaming system, there are black vertical bars on the left and right of the screen. It didn't do this in the past, it would stretch out the picture to fit the screen. How do I fix this? Any help would be much appreciated.
 
Most sets nowadays have an 'automatic' picture setting, to change from the 4 by 3 to the HDTV 16 by 9 aspect ratio...Or you can set them manually with your remote setting 'picture' or 'zoom'... If you don't have that, check in your Menu for picture size options...I always look for a TV with the 'auto' function....
