My tank heater has always been a little messed up. It usually heats the tank about four degrees higher than what I have it set at. I could usually guess what to set it at because it consistently runs high. A couple of nights ago, I had left the lights off on the tank all day to see exactly how much the lights heat the water up. I was about to go to bed and I checked the temp. and instead of the usual 82 -84 degrees, it was ninety-two. I put in a different thermometer I know works, just to make sure. Sure enough, it was 92. The water felt really warm to my hand and my fish were acting strange. They were acting hyper or something. I unplugged the heater. The next day I set it to run at 76 instead of 78. It ran about four to six degrees high for several hours and I thought it just needed to be reset. That evening I checked it and it was 90 degrees in the tank. Once again, I unplugged it. I set it to 72 the next day and plugged it back in. It keeps on heating the tank past what I have it set for and won't turn off unless I unplug it. It's in a 150 gallon tank and it is made for that size tank. I can't find any heaters big enough for my tank at the local stores. I would have to drive about two hours to get to a store that has one large enough and then drive two hours back. I don't want it to over heat my tank while I'm gone and there would be nobody here to check on it. Is there any way to fix it?
