How to figure out if WMA media files are corrupt and what is really going on?

A friend has some files with WMA-extension that I think are corrupt, but they could also be that they are a "wrong" form of WMA, or a completely different format altogether.

How can I figure this out? Or what would be the best player to try?
(My Windows Media Players are asking for a license)
