How to figure out earth's surface gravity and escape speed?

assuming that the entire planet had a density equal to that of the crust, say, 3000kg/m^3

I think the formula is G * M / r2

where g = 6.67 x 10^-11, and M = 5.98 x 10^24..however I'm still confused because of the density...

please help and explain...thanks..
