How to fade uneven denim jeans?

I bought a pair of used denim jeans at a vintage store. The previous owner had tapered the legs and I removed the stitching to get more of a flare leg. The problem is that the denim color is uneven now where I removed the stitching. How many washes will it take until the denim matches uniformly all the way around? Should I use hot water? Is there a way to quicken the process? Thanks!

maybe put a little bleach on them, that might make spots, but it seems to me that a lot of new pants have this in the design. Martha Stewart did a segment about fading jeans by hand, you could look for it on her website.

The way that we faded our dungarees when I was in the Coast Guard was that we would tie a line through legs and drop then over the side of the ship while underway. Dungarees are what jeans were called back in the day.

Washing will never "even up" the color. You might try something like "rit" jean lightener to get some of the color to be less contrasted but you can't just hope that washing will only affect one area and not the rest.
