How to drill a hole in a wall?

How can I drill a clean hole into a wall. How do I know how deep the hole needs to be, does it have to be as deep as the screw or more or less. What about thickness of hole how do I decide that? How do I use the depth-stop with my drill.

I drilled a hole before and the the screw went in about 3/4 and the last quarter would not screw in. So I drilled some more and then the screw went in too easily, hole was too big and screw was moving. So what can I do better next time.
thanks

It depends on what you are drilling. If you are drilling a large piece of wood then if the hole is too small its not a problem simple force the screw into the pilot hole with brute force.
If you drilling a brick then drill a hole deeper than the size you want the screw to go in to the brick and use a drill of a slightly larger width than the screw. Drill the hole and then hammer in a rawl plug or a piece of wood , then screw the screw in to the rawl plug.
