I've searched google too long and all I get back is "don't hike alone" and "don't travel at dawn or dusk". Gee, thanks horrible copy/paste advice articles.
I'm doing a long hike over a short time that will require hiking during civil dawn and dusk, maybe into the night. I will be alone in puma country and hiking at a fast pace. Every 15 miles is a trailhead (thanks to perpendicular road development) so it's fairly civilized, but the length of the trail runs in wilderness preserve. Aside from my belt knife and a smaller one on my ankle, what deterent can I utilize to avoid these risky hours?
(One interesting, albeit unorthadox, deterent I found on a random forum was to put a scary halloween mask on the back of your head, since pumas ambush from behind.)
