how to darken my mares coat?

She's getting sun bleached, and once it's begun, it's difficult to reverse until the hair grows out. Turn her out at night only, so she'll be exposed to sun only during rides.

Yes, 'Black as Night' is a great product, as is Quick Silver shampoo. You can try to add a natural henna to her mane & tail, but realize it will add a reddish hue. If you use a chemical hair dye, it will dry her coat & possibly be caustic to her skin.

In this case, an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure.

Sorry

Some good general tips would be to get a fly spray with some sunscreen in it to prevent any further bleaching, trying feeding different supplements, and lots of brushing for shine. For shine, the best things that I have found are 1) Omega-3 Horseshine and 2) lots of elbow grease, haha. The best way to bring out the shine in a horse's coat is to make sure they are getting a balanced diet, and to spend lots of time grooming them. Omega-3 Horseshine is a really nice all-around supplement that I have found that works really well on the horse's coat. It helps with tons of things, but a shiny coat and mane/tail growth is what I have noticed most in my horse. For grooming, spend lots of time with a curry comb, and then a flat, oval brush with short bristles (the kind that looks more like a paddle and has a handle on the back) to help distribute oil evenly throughout the coat.

As far as keeping the horse black, there are a few things you can try. Turn her out at night instead of the day to prevent her from getting bleached. Get her a UV sheet to protect the coat, and use a fly spray with sunscreen in it. I have also heard that feeding paprika as a supplement works really well. I personally am going to be starting my bay on it, as I've heard it helps with any darker hair coat.

Good luck!

i posted this before but i mostly got answers of black as night.I am interested in it but i just wanted to expand my options.I have a 13 year 14.2 azteca black mare. Her coat is starting to turn brown and her mane is bleaching out to.She is only in the sun when she is in the pasture or i am riding her.Her previous owner told me that they use sunflower seeds in her grain but obviously its not working.I would like her coat darker and shinny,It's a little dull right now.So any ideas or websites or home made stuff i can use?

Thank you!
