How to create dynamic HTML emails?

I am looking to create dynamic html emails, similar to the emails that travel websites such as Expedia and Kayak send out. They can customize emails to reflect the user's name, home airport and preferred destinations.

How would I go about creating this automatically, based on an ever-changing database?

I am looking into this myself and though I am not quite sure yet how it works I can recommend a book that talks directly about this try head first php and mysql it starts out talking about sending email and it has a great learning style
