I may sound a bit too optermistic, but I have what me any my family think as a brilliant idea for a film, an idea that has never been done before and has a lot to do with todays world.

But besides the point how will i go around seriously copyriting the idea, as i cannot tell it to a film comany because they can legally nick the idea off me and I will be left with nothing. But if i made the idea legally mine then they would (hopefully) buy the idea off me. I have drafted out a sheet of possible storylines, titels and advertising catch phrases.

So can anyone please help??

Also how would I go around actually asking the film companys to look at my idea too?

Thankyou!! :)

The film companies cant legally steal your idea after you tell them because all such works are automatically given copyright protection. If they were to attempt to rip your idea off you would then be in a position to take the film studio to court although your find in previous cases the film studios have got around this problem by changing it significantly enough to claim it an original idea.

You could Tradmark all the potential titles, catchphrases ect although this is fairly expensive and wont do much more than prevent them using these names without paying you money to do so and rather than do this they would probally just use a differnt title anyway

A quick wat to do this would be to post the script idea to yourself and don't open the envelope.

That way if someone pinches your idea, after you've approached a company with it you will have a sealed copy with a date stamp on it.

Sorry but you can't copyright an idea, you will have to do a lot more work to formulate it into a feasible plot so that you can at least sell it to a writer who is willing to develop it into a proper script.

If you feel up to expanding your idea further then do a search on the web for 'Writing a synopsis' get stuck in and you will then you may end up with something worth copyrighting.

Get the current Writer's and Artists Yearbook from your local library for invaluable addresses and contacts.

Best of luck!
