I have crawdad in the area were i live and i want to start catching some. I am framiliar with some methods but i just plan on going down there and flipping over rocks and grabbing them, but first i need to know how to cook them. I know you are supposed to boil them but should i kill them before i boil them? If so how would i go about doing it? Also i know you can eat the tails...but can you also eat the claws like lobster?

Here's how it's done.Put a pot of water on to boil big enough to hold the crawfish.Season the water at this point with Shrimp and crab boil.Bring water to boil.Put in crawfish-(alive) the boiling water will kill them immediately.Allow the water to come to a boil again with the crawfish in it. Now you have a choice. You can either cut off the heat at this point and cover the pot and let the crawfish soak for 25 minutes with the lid on.This will make the crawfish soak up more of the seasoning .This is actually the preferred method. Or when the crawfish start boiling instead of cutting off the heat and letting them soak you time the crawfish and boil for 6 minutes, then cut off heat and start eating. The main thing is not to over cook the crawfish- it will make them mushy a almost impossible to peel. Great eating! Oh, the larger ones have claws that will be great eating.

do not kill the crawfish prior to boiling them. if any are dead, do not eat them. and yes the claw meat is good, but only worth it on the big crawfish. also, if you are a showoff, you can suck the head.
