How to construct legs for a sideboard/buffet table?

I am taking an old bookcase, and turning it on its side to create a sideboard (buffet) to go along my dining room. What materials should I use to create the legs? It needs to be raised by about 1.5 or 2 feet. I am not sure if I should use wood or metal, and how I would attach the legs.
