how to connect stereo to tv samsung?

i have a fairly old stereo, panasonic, with a red and white aux adapters at the back
i have a samsung lcdtv, with a red and white adapters
i connect these with the red and white at both ends lead and no sound,

tv is switched to external speakers and stereo is set to AUX, got any ideas?
